The purpose of the study was to determine the susceptibility to penicilline and erithromycin of Streptococcus pyogenes strains, isolated with two-year interval from throat cultures as agent of upper-respiratory tract infection agent, using E-test. Susceptibility to both antibiotics of 58 and 43 strains isolated in 1998 and 2001, respectively, were tested. No penicillin resistance was found. There was no macrolide resistance found either, on the contrary to expectations. Minimal inhibitory concentration of erithromycin (MIC), which is also a representative of susceptibility of other macrolides according to National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards was detected in the range of 0.0032-0.38 µg/ml. In conclusion, macrolide resistance of strains isolated from the region has not been a problem yet.
