There are limited options in the treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of fosfomycin trometamole (FT) as an alternative agent in MRSA infections. The susceptibility of 170 nosocomial MRSA strains to FT was determined by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Susceptibilities to oxacillin, cefoxitine, and some other antimicrobial agents were also determined. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and ATCC 33591 (MRSA) were used as quality control strains. Susceptibilities for FT, fusidic acid, trimethoprime-sulfomethoxazole and chloramphenicol were 63%, 96.5%, 98.8% and 97.1%, respectively. All strains were susceptible to vancomycin. It is concluded that FT could be an alternative treatment agent for MRSA infections especially in case of treatment failures with other antimicrobial agents.
